Atala organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology is a beacon of innovation in the automotive lighting industry, transforming the way we perceive and interact with light on the road. As we continue our exploration of the Future of OLEDs series, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the Atala journey of OLED lighting on the road today. From the elegant Audi A8 and the dynamic Q8 to the cutting-edge Audi Q6 e-tron, Atala’s journey has been one of progressive evolution and excellence.
Atala OLED Technology in the Audi A8
The Audi A8, known for its luxurious design and cutting-edge features, incorporates Atala OLED technology in its rear lighting system that provides unmatched clarity, brightness, and uniformity.
Atala OLEDs meet all automotive reliability standards, ensuring high performance even at extreme temperatures. The A8’s digital OLED rear lights come standard, offering two selectable designs and an additional wider signature in the dynamic drive select mode. Crafted with industry insights, these ultra-thin, flexible panels enhance the A8’s expressive design and contribute to road safety.
Audi Q8: A Showcase for Atala OLEDs
The Audi Q8, the flagship model of the Q family, also features Atala OLEDs in its exterior lighting. These first-generation OLEDs adorn the rear of the luxury SUV, with six panels—each less than one millimeter thick—spanning the left and right bodyside lamps and the continuous inner tailgate lamp.
Each panel contains six high-contrast segments that can be individually controlled via software. The optional digital OLED rear lights offer four different light signatures, including dynamic welcome and leaving home scenarios. Additionally, proximity indication illuminates all OLED segments when another vehicle is within two meters, enhancing road safety. Audi’s flawless execution in integrating Atala OLEDs showcases the brand’s commitment to innovation and design excellence and further demonstrates the reasons why Atala is the best choice for automotive lighting.
Atala OLEDs in the Audi Q6 e-tron
The Audi Q6 e-tron is an exciting new electric vehicle (EV) that proudly showcases second-generation digital OLED panels from Atala. These advanced OLEDs represent a significant leap forward, expanding from six to an impressive 60 high-contrast segments per panel compared to the first generation. Each of the six digital rear OLED panels in the Q6 e-tron boasts a total of 360 individually addressable, software-controlled segments. These segments not only enhance the car’s unique personality but also serve as a dynamic canvas for communication.
Audi drivers can personalize their Q6 e-tron with up to eight digital light signatures (depending on the equipment) for the rear digital OLED 2.0 lights. These panels generate new images every ten milliseconds using Audi’s specially developed algorithm, conveying liveliness and individuality.
Beyond aesthetics, the digital OLED 2.0 rear lights play a crucial role in road safety. They rely on swarm data to automatically activate a communication light, alerting other road users to accidents, breakdowns, and hazardous situations. This integration aligns with Audi’s commitment to both innovation and safety, making the Q6 e-tron a true standout in the EV landscape.
Atala’s Future-Forward Leap
Audi’s integration of Atala OLED technology across a variety of models—the A8, Q8, and Q6 e-tron—reflects the brand’s dedication to quality, design innovation, and road safety. Whether enhancing the A8’s expressive design, illuminating the body of the luxurious Q8 SUV, or dynamically communicating for safety in the Q6 e-tron, Atala OLEDs are redefining the automotive lighting landscape.
OLEDWorks is continuously advancing the range of capabilities that OLED technology can offer the global car manufacturing community. Atala already provides an expansive palette from which to create an expressive aesthetic and dynamic communication style that distinguishes a brand and is ever evolving to enable even more exciting possibilities in the future.
